YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar announced Thursday that it would resume issuing visitors visas to revive its dormant tourism industry, devastated by the coronavirus pandemic and violent political unrest.
According to a government notice published in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper on Sunday, tourist "eVisas" will be issued online to harmonize tourism with neighboring countries.
Visitors must have a vaccination certificate, negative results from a COVID-19 RT-PCR test taken shortly before their flight, and travel insurance. Following their arrival, they must also take an ATK rapid test.
Myanmar resumed issuing business visas on April 1 and lifted a ban on international commercial flights on April 17. In March 2020, it ceased issuing visas and suspended flight arrivals.
Most Southeast Asian countries rely heavily on tourism for revenue, but after the coronavirus pandemic began in early 2020, they banned almost all foreign visitors. Most have reopened in the last six months, gradually removing almost all testing requirements.
