KATHMANDU, Nepal Police found drivers of many school-operated buses in Kathmandu Valley driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the report, traffic officers conducted a surprise check on Monday morning and impounded at least five school buses carrying schoolchildren and their drivers under the influence.
According to traffic police, 11 of the 16 buses had violated various traffic rules.
On Monday morning, traffic officers in the Valley checked 175 school buses.
"This is a grave issue," said Mira Chaudhry, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police. "We confiscated the documents of all those caught drinking and driving and notified the educational institutions involved."
Traffic officers used breathalyzers to test the blood alcohol content.
During an investigation, the drivers admitted to drinking alcohol on Sunday night, according to the traffic police.
Nepal has strict alcohol-driving laws, with even a trace of alcohol detected in a breathalyzer resulting in the driver's arrest. The fine is Rs1,000, and the drivers must attend a 1.5-hour road safety course.
